all of these are geeky. ugh.
15th-Apr-2007 05:55 am (UTC)
exactly. I don't think these polls should relate to pop-culture stuff (er, nerd culture? whatever).

thus, the dream machine is really all that's left.

I am so so sorry, Browncoats. But video games > all, even Whedon.

Excuse me, I need to go hide in shame now.
15th-Apr-2007 03:26 am (UTC)
video games ftw...we can go into hiding together. :D
15th-Apr-2007 03:25 am (UTC)
Wow... I think this is the first elimination round where I really don't think any one of these things is particularly good, let alone best thing ever. *sigh*
15th-Apr-2007 03:30 am (UTC)
agreeded.
15th-Apr-2007 03:26 am (UTC)
Dear Gandalf,
You know I'll always love you, but that bag of holding thing is slightly more beneficial to me. Say hello to all the peeps in the Grey Havens.

Love,
Me
15th-Apr-2007 03:30 am (UTC)
I completely agree. Lol.
15th-Apr-2007 03:37 am (UTC)
This selection is the largest collection of geekdome I've encountered on this community.

It is for this reason that this it the most difficult poll I've answered yet.
15th-Apr-2007 04:27 am (UTC)
seconded. ^_^
15th-Apr-2007 03:41 am (UTC)
So since the last poll when I hadn't seen firefly, and defended the bug, I have proceeded to see the entire series, and voted for it here. The bounty hunter was just too cool. Cooler than gandalf or some nerdy bag.
15th-Apr-2007 03:52 am (UTC)
Welcome, Browncoat. Have you seen the BDM?
15th-Apr-2007 03:43 am (UTC)
Am I the only one who has no idea what a "really huge Bag of Holding" is?
15th-Apr-2007 04:16 am (UTC)
Nope. I had to look it up.

A thoughtful analysis to be sure. I just don't believe that a Dream (Recording) Machine can truly exist. By taking out the haziness of the memory of a dream, you turn it into something that is no longer a dream.

Moreover, the existence of such a machine may well reverberate through our culture, causing the next generation to grow up regularly recording their dreams, and that awareness of being recorded could infect people's dreams and change them into something uglier than they are now.

I had to vote for the really big Bag of Holding, and I'm embarrassed that I am so nerdy that I didn't even consider that someone might not know what it is.
15th-Apr-2007 03:55 am (UTC)
wtf @ everything except for gandalf and the dream machine.
15th-Apr-2007 03:56 am (UTC)
If any of the first three options wins I will kill a small animal. And by that I mean I'll complain a lot.
15th-Apr-2007 06:09 am (UTC)
I love this comment.
15th-Apr-2007 04:02 am (UTC)
I love the eliminations.

For me it was the video games versus the Bag of Holding. I suspect a lot of people don't actually know what a bag of holding is.
15th-Apr-2007 04:05 am (UTC)
Being an out of state student at my college, with move-out time approaching, I can't help but appreciate the prospect of being able to throw ALL my crap, even furniture, in a bag and wander off with it. Hell, I could even take it back home on the plane with me.

If only, if only...
15th-Apr-2007 04:34 am (UTC)
you'd never need to check luggage again...

I don't understand how it isn't winning, other than the fact that a lot of people probably don't know what it is (I didn't). that's got to be one of the most useful things ever.
15th-Apr-2007 04:54 am (UTC)
It was a tough choice between the video games and the bag of holding. Video games have brought me so much joy and lovely nostalgia, but then I have to just THINK of what I would do with a huge bag of holding. I'd never have to check baggage again! I'd never have to lug tons of bags around while shopping! I would never ever in my life have to make more than one trip when lugging stuff.

PLUS I could just use it to store my crap and then I wouldn't have such a cluttered room! It's worth it alone for my shoes. >_>
15th-Apr-2007 06:08 am (UTC)
Gandalf Greyhame/Stormcrow/the Gray is badder-ass than any of you can imagine. Mithrandir people, come on!

Bah.
15th-Apr-2007 09:22 am (UTC)
This is true.

But did any of Gandalf's people personally name their weapons?

Mal had a lady of the evening, a young girl/killing device, the most uptight doctor ever, a mysterious reverend, a gormless dork, the cutest couple in love anywhere and, to top it all off, he hid extra guns in the cargo area just in case he needed to pull it and shoot someone.

Plus, I don't want to spoil it too much, but Mal's way of handling hostage situations is top notch.

I'm not quite sure Firefly beats all the choices now, but it sure beats Gandalf.
15th-Apr-2007 06:28 am (UTC) - Hmmm...
Well, time to think it out:

Gandalf: He seems to have largely defined the wise old mentor in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. Think wizard, and you'll probably come up with something close to an image of Gandalf. Not to mention that he's just plain awesome...

Firefly: Words cannot describe the awesomeness that is Firefly... Too bad it's so short. *curses Fox*

Golden Age Video Games: They're so hard. But they're awesome. However, the good must come with the bad here...

Dream Recorder: Well, it's incredibly useful...

Huge bag of Holding: Again, it's useful.

I guess it boils down to Gandalf or Firefly. Damn. I've been a fan of Gandalf since my Dad read me the Hobbit when I was six. But like I said, words cannot describe.

Guess it's time for a coin flip. *flips coin* Gandalf it is!
15th-Apr-2007 01:35 pm (UTC) - Re: Hmmm...
I seriously love those old NES video games that hate you. Metalstorm's bosses, Elevator Action, shooters like Life Force and Legendary Wings...they all hate you. They want you to die. When you beat them, you feel like you've truly vanquished a worthy enemy.
15th-Apr-2007 06:32 am (UTC)
What sort of dreams are all you people having that make that machine sound so good? Or is it the dreams that you don't remember but assume must have been really awesome? In any case, I see some serious lack of proper appreciation for video games here.
15th-Apr-2007 09:25 am (UTC)
I used to have quite awesome dreams. Complicated plots, flying, machine gun battles, romance, all sorts of good crap. Even the nightmares were cool, mainly because they made sense.

Five, ten years ago, I'd pick the dream machine in a heartbeat.

Now, I dream I was -preparing- to go into space but I was thinking of bowing out due to a bad headache.

I never actually got into space, I just dream I'm preparing or failing to do something cool.
15th-Apr-2007 06:47 am (UTC)
Frankly, this is a pretty tough choice for me. I voted for Firefly, but to me any of them could win and I'd be happy (with the possible exception of the dream machine... but seems like I might be up for a disappointment).
15th-Apr-2007 06:50 am (UTC)
Firefly FTW!

Why is the dream machine winning? I don't want to record my dreams. They're creepy enough the first time.
15th-Apr-2007 07:47 am (UTC)
But I want to record your dreams and see what creepy stuff your subconscious gets up to.
15th-Apr-2007 07:08 am (UTC)
Man, how could people want to record dreams more than be able to put all of their possesions in a bag and carry it around? Dreams are dreamlike for a reason, they are supposed to be mysterious. A huge bag of holding would mean you could be a complete packrat and still have a neat and tidy uncluttered house. That is totally a candidate for Best Thing Ever.

although Gandalf did tempt me to vote for him, since he is just so darn cool
15th-Apr-2007 11:31 am (UTC)
All the people who want to record their dreams must have had some really amazing dreams. I don't remember most of my dreams, and I see this as a good thing - the people I know who remember their dreams all the time tend to have nightmares every night.

I realize the bag of holding thing is rather geeky (although I figured out what it was even though I've never played D&D - I looked it up to be sure - is it really that hard to understand?) but as actual useful things go, it certainly trumps the rest of those options.
15th-Apr-2007 07:09 am (UTC)
i love buffy and joss, but if the dreams i remember are as half as wacky as the ones i forget, i want to remember that shit.
15th-Apr-2007 07:14 am (UTC)
Will someone please tell me wtf a bag of holding is?!
15th-Apr-2007 09:15 am (UTC)
Um...something to wear on your belt and you can store huge things in it, like a sword or a car or the collected, bound volumes of Ultimate Spider-Man.
15th-Apr-2007 07:55 am (UTC)
For some reason, I've believed for years that real life is actually a dream and that my dreams are - get this! It'll blow your mind! - real life! So, for that reason, I would like to see my dreams, and experience the truth of who I really am.
15th-Apr-2007 01:39 pm (UTC)
Sometimes I believe the second part of that but not the first. It does seem that I'm visiting another world in my dreams, one that plays by its own set of rules: an alternate reality.
15th-Apr-2007 09:13 am (UTC)
Depends on what the Golden Age is.

Classic Rampage is cool because you can bash one building while climbing another. Classic Spy Hunter for the NES is cool because all the 'glitches' are actually features. Such as battling your supply van, riding over trees.

A machine that can record dreams would be cool. Recording -my- dreams, however, would be not. Ten minutes of looking for the bathroom? Not fun. Plus, my nightmares are no longer cool, they're just sucky 'my dog got hurt' style dreams.

In the end, I have to vote for Firefly. Sure, a bag of holding ROCKS but it doesn't have Mal and the rest and a girl who promises to kill with her brain.

15th-Apr-2007 02:26 pm (UTC)
technically you could put firefly in the bag. ;)
15th-Apr-2007 09:14 am (UTC)
i'm almost never in the majority, but my first choice was the dream thing and second was Firefly. whacky! anyways, dreams are the best. if all your dreams were lucid dreams and you dreamed all the time, you'd be God.
15th-Apr-2007 09:30 am (UTC)
Looking around my room, a really huge Bag of Holding would be great, I could just put all my junk in it & sit it in the bottom of my wardrobe instead of having all but a 2ft square space on my floor between my door & my bed full of all my junk.
